(Le yack porte une bosse dorsale et une forte crinière, une fourrure longue et épaisse. On le trouve jusqu'à 6 000 m d'altitude, en troupeaux nombreux. Le yack domestique [Tibet] est élevé comme bête de somme et pour son lait, sa chair et son cuir.)

ZOOL. Grand mammifère ruminant, de l'ordre des Artiodactyles, de la famille des Bovidés, aux formes massives, aux cornes arquées, aux longs poils soyeux, que l'on rencontre à l'état sauvage sur les hauts plateaux de l'Asie centrale, mais le plus souvent à l'état domestique au Tibet. Yack commun, grogneur; yack muet. J'ai vu des bisons, des bœufs de l'Inde (...); des buffles au museau noir et humide (...); des yacks aux longs poils et des kangourous au museau pointu (DU CAMP, Hollande, 1859, p. 119). Pour les nomades du Thibet, le yak est donc un animal d'une importance immense. Là où ces indigènes sont devenus agriculteurs, ils ont ici encore pris modèle sur le bœuf et attelé leurs yaks à la charrue (LOWIE, Anthropol. cult., trad. par E. Métraux, 1936, p. 59).
